| Runtimes |
| What are Runtimes? |
The first versions of Timedex and its sister programs were developed using embedded code for Windows CE (Windows 2002 for Pocket PC). When Windows 2003 for pocket PC and Windows Mobile Operating Systems for the PPC were introduced, in order for the programs to work, a runtime library program has to be placed on the PPC. This continues to be the case for the Windows Mobile OS. The runtime "library" has the wonderful name of msvbppc.armv4.cab. Actually there may be several differing versions around the web but this version seems to work across all machines. If there are any instance when this has not happened I would be grateful for any information so it can be documented. Note that the runtime is not installed from the PC/Laptop with ActiveSync but directly from "inside" the PPC. |
|
Getting the Runtime
|
Find the file msvbppc.armv4.cab from whatever source - from the web, contacts or, for a limited time from the downloads of this site. Place in an accessible place on your PC/Laptop (ie desktop) and open the mobile device in a window close by. |

Drag the runtime icon from the desktop into the open PPC window showing its "root" folder - "My Device". The icon will then drop into place as shown here (left & below). A screen will appear showing progress. It is quite a large file and could take several seconds to transfer from the PC/Laptop to the PPC. |

The
file should "come to rest" the the PPC root folder and depending
on your view formatting might look something like the illustration to
the right.

| Installing it | All you have to do is, using the PPC handheld, find the runtime and tap it with the stylus; it will then install itself into the core operating system. Note tat this operation may take a minute or two to complete. All the Timedex family will then work. |

From tapping the icon in the PPC to installation could take a couple of minutes. You may get a warning (right) that it may not display properly. This is is a reference to the issue of losing decenders in some text windows. This only affects us in a small way in the note section of the programs and does not affect any functionality. |

| Lastly |
Earlier versions of the operating system seemed to delete the original runtime library at the end of the install; this is good because the file is large, nearly 3 MB. Later versions might not do this so if your PPC is ever short of memory you can delete it. Always keep a copy of this file in a safe place, preferably on a Data-Stick, CD-ROM or DVD stored separately from the machine and, if your work is mobile, always take a copy leaving one "at base". |
